Environmental Management System

The tourism industry is heavily dependent on natural and cultural resources such as landforms, waterfalls, rainforests, flora and fauna and historical sites and buildings for its continued well-being. However, despite this dependence, the industry has the potential to impact both the physical and social environment in a significantly adverse manner.
Heritage Tours With the growing importance of tourism, there have been increasing demands by governments, the general public and the industry itself, for the integration of environmental management with tourism development. One instrument in achieving this integration is the implementation of Environmental Management Systems (EMS).
This approach was adopted by the St. Lucia Heritage Tourism Programme, who in 2001, collaborated with the OECS-NRMU and the Heritage Tourism Association of St. Lucia (HERITAS), to initiate the implementation of EMS at HERITAS member sites and attractions.

An EMS is a structured approach, which seeks to ensure environmentally responsible operations by planning, controlling, measuring and improving an organization's environmental efforts.

it requires an organization to assess its operations and their impacts on the environment; plan for managing the impacts; control the processes and activities that give rise to the impacts; and measure, review and continuously improve environmental efforts.
